Haugesund Byvandring was started on January 2nd 2003 as number 36 of many permanent walks in Norway. A complete list over these walks is found at NFFs WEB-pages.
Starting hour: 06:00 (6 a.m.) - 24:00 (12 a.m.) every day throughout the year. Thoug there may be some exceptions on special holy days - feel free to contact Haugatrim in advance. There are two different routes, 12 km and 6 km. Both routes are easy to complete. The short route is also suitable for wheelchair-users with a companion.
Starting point: ESSO Gard Servicenter A/S (gas station) which is located at RV 47, just to the south of Norway's national monument - Haraldshaugen. There is free parking at the starting point.
Registering: In the gas station you'll find a box containing starting cards, staring protocol, route descriptions (in both English and Norwegian), maps and the IVV-stamp. Write your name in the starting protocol. Every participant shall have his/her own starting card. Note your number you have got in the protocol on your starting card. Pick up your starting card, a route description (if needed) and a map (if needed) before you are leaving the station.
The codes are changed all the time. It's thus very important the correct code is registered in the correct rubric - so that the number at the control-points and the number at the rubrics always are the same no matter what direction one choose to walk.
The routes: are nice urban walks. The 12 km route is designed to let the walker see the most important landmarks in our town. Digging or other work the sometimes taking place in streets, might cause minor temporary changes in the route, but at the starting point you will always find route descriptions which are up-to-date. The 12 km route passes central landmarks as: Haugesunds pink city hall, the statue of Marilyn Monroe on the quayside, "kaipromenaden" in Smedasundet, Haugesund grand place, the park, Sørhaugøy light tower (Tonjer), the Haralds-monument, the Harald-hilll and the cross-hill.
Control: There are 6 (long) or 4 (short) control points in the route. At these points you will find signs with letter combinations which are to be written down in the starting card. So please remember to bring something to write with.
Starting fee: IVV-stamp only cost NOK 15,- After the walk is ended the starting fee of NOK 15,- for each participant together with the starting card are given to the staff at the station. Please see to that all controls are registered in the starting card together with your name and the hour for both starting and finishing of the walk.
Award: A special metal-badge (see the illustration above) can bee bought for NOK 35,-
IVV-stamps: You have to put the IVV-stamps in your own IVV-cards. The kilometres are registered for maximum one round (12 or 6 km) each day, and the participation is registered maximum once in three months (new stamp from January 1st, April 1st, July 1st and October 1st).
If you have any comments to us please feel free to write down your message behind your staring card before giving it to the staff at station. If you have any complaints about the route please don't harm the staff of the station with any harmful reaction. They have nothing to do with the route - so please be careful to direct such comments directly to Haugatrim.
